June 21 New Breed Results

Evo Fight Team had four fighters competing in the New Breed amateur event on Saturday, June 21st. Ernesto Perez made his debut in the cage against Ryan Burtis. Ernesto started the fight a little slow, feeling out his opponent and ended up getting taken down in the first. He did a good job of avoiding damage, but the judges awarded the first round to Burtis. The second round was a little closer but once again Ernesto found himself defending from the bottom. Burtis won the round. The third round is what we were looking for. Ernesto came out and totally dominated his opponent. He had the advantage in the stand up fight, then took Burtis down and pounded on him until the round ended. Unfortunately, it was a little too late. Burtis won by judges decision.
Chris Edwards was competing in the second fight of his amateur career. He started off doing great and was winning the stand up battle. He was throwing strong punches while his opponent backed away. Then, both fighters threw kicks and Edwards got caught. The fight ended up on the ground where both fighters scrambled for position. However, it was Chris Aquino who managed to secure the armbar and win the fight.
Tony Williams fought Joe Molinari. Tony dominated all three rounds of mostly stand-up action and won by judges decision.
Ed Postalwaite stepped into the cage for his first time against Anthony Rosario who was also making his fight debut. These two guys came to do battle. Despite being several pounds lighter than Rosario, Ed traded punches with the bigger opponent in a furious manner for three rounds. Both fighters showed tremendous heart and stamina as they threw bombs at each others faces and drove hard knees into each other's bodies. In the third round, both fighters looked like they went through a war. Rosario landed a strong punch that rocked Postalwaite for a second. The ref thought it was a little too much and stopped the fight. Ed wanted to keep fighting but the ref said enough was enough. Even though Ed didn't get the win, he put on an incredible fight and had the crowd on their feet. Several people said it was easily the fight of the night and quite possibly the fight of the year.
Evo Fight Team is proud of all their fighters who step into the cage and do battle.
Photos are in the gallery.

Evo BBQ June 7th

Al Buck hosted the Evo Fight Team's summer BBQ at his house on Saturday June 7th. It was a hot day but everyone seemed to have a great time. We watched the UFC Pay Per View outside while kids ran around, played on the water slide and took turns in the dunk tank. A few of the adults even volunteered to sit in the dunk tank while kids took turns trying to get them wet. The party continued into the night and everyone had a blast.
Al and Alex also awarded two fighters with "Warrior Spirit" plaques. Lionel Cortez was the first recipient for all he's done in the sport of MMA and also with his fight to recovery following his terrible motorcycle accident. The second award went to Mike Zellner who has done a lot for the club in past couple of years and will be moving to Florida soon.
Thanks to Al, his wife Kristy, and everyone else who contributed. Pictures from the BBQ are in the photo gallery.

Update on Lionel Cortes.

Lionel has shown amazing improvements in the months since his terrible motorcycle accident. He has already surpassed the doctors expectations. We would like to thank everyone for their prayers and contributions. His family and friends are very thankful to everyone who helped.

Evo Fighters at the next New Breed Event.

Evo Fight Club has four fighters scheduled to fight at the next New Breed amateur event in Atlantic City. Ernesto Perez will make his amateur debut against Ryan Buritis. Chris Edwards will go against Chris Aquino. Tony Williams will continue in the cruiserweight tournament against Harley Beekman. Ed Postalweite will also make his amateur debut against Anthony Rosario. Come out to the House of Blues at the Showboat casino on Saturday, June 21st to cheer them on. http://www.newbreedfighters.tv for more info.

Evo Fight Club will be saying farewell to one of it's own.

Mike Zellner has been training with Evo for over two years. In that time, he has become a great friend to everyone in the club. Mike's knowledge of MMA has increased tremendously and he's always been willing to help others with what he's learned. Mike has placed well in several submission tournaments and has also done a great job helping work the corner for some of Evo's amateur fights. On top of all that, Mike serves his country as a member of the US Coast Guard. The Coast Guard has restationed Mike, so he will be moving to Florida along with his wife and daughter. The Zellner family will be missed and everyone at Evo Fight Club appreciates the time he's given to us. We wish them the very best.

May 3rd New Breed Results

Pat White fought his heart out but was on the bad end of a split decision against Samad Mobley from Ghetto Daze Fight Club. Tony Williams is entered in the New Breed Cruiserweight tournament and ran through his first opponent. He won by TKO just 52 seconds into the first round. He will fight Harley Beekman in the second round of the tournament on June 21st. Evo expects to have 3 or 4 more fighters on that June 21st card as well.

March 29th New Breed Results

March 29th was a night of disappointment for the Evo Fight Team. It started out with a non-fight. Tony William's opponent dropped out of the fight so Tony had to watch instead of participate. New Breed went through a few fighters before they finally got one to stay on the card and fight Chris Edwards. This was Chris' debut amateur fight. He brought a lot of tools to the cage and worked on several submission attemps before finally getting caught in a very tight triangle choke. He held out as long as he could but eventually had to tap out.
Brian Danner flat out got robbed in his title fight against Jeff Lentz. Danner dominated the first and third rounds by taking Lentz down and controlling him from the top almost the entire round. In the second round, Lentz did manage to secure a triangle choke on Danner, but Danner fought hard and eventually managed to pick Lentz up and slam him down to break the hold. I'm not sure what the judges were watching, but they somehow gave a 29-28 victory to Lentz. I guess if you're the current title holder, you get spotted a couple rounds. Even the review writer for New Breed thought it was off. Check out his review from newbreedfighters.tv:
"Rhino Fight Team's Jeff " i'm never short of words" Lentz shocked the crowd with a stunning, and to some, controversial upset of Brian Danner from Team Evo. Brian has now contributed to the two best fights ever seen in our New Breed Fighter Cage. Rob Gaurino should be proud of the effort put forth by Mr. Lentz. A lack of heart will never be an issue with this determined athlete. Mr. Al Buck and his prized student have us all waiting in anticipation for the next superfight Brian takes part in. We can't wait."

Ring of Combat 3-7-08 Results

Al Buck controlled the early action. His stand up looked strong and when Binky Jones initiated the clinch, Al managed the takedown, getting top position and landing a few good shots on the ground. However, Jones has a very strong ground game and managed to secure a Kimura. Al rolled out initially but Binky wouldn't give it up and improved his position to lock it in. Hats off to both fighters for an action packed battle. Photos of the fight and after-party are in the gallery.

Evo fighters will be competing at New Breed March 29th

A few fighters from the Evolution fight team will be competing March 29th at New Breed's event in Atlantic City. Competing from Evo Fight Team are Bryan Danner, Tony Williams, Victor Bascomi and Chris Edwards. Danner will be fighting for the New Breed Middleweight title against Jeff Lentz. Tony will be fighting Luca Carol. Victor will be fighting Eric Simmons. Chris will be fighting Nick Hogan.

Al Buck fighting Binky Jones at Ring of Combat (March 7th)

Al Buck will be fighting at the Tropicana casino in Atlantic City on Friday, March 7th. His opponent will be Binky Jones from Renzo Gracie's camp. Binky Jones was recently selected to fight in the IFL so this should be a good matchup for the super-popular Al Buck. Contact Al Buck for tickets.

Feb 9th New Breed Results

Bryan Danner and Mervin Rodriguez finally got to fight each other on February 9th at the New Breed show in Atlantic City. Both fighters came out throwing punches in the first round. Mervin surprised us a little with his boxing skills and both fighters managed to land a few good shots. In the second round, Danner clinched with Rodriguez and took him down. Mervin immediately tried to turn to get up but Danner took his back and finished him with a rear naked choke. Congrats to Bryan Danner who remains undefeated and will fight for the New Breed title at their March 29th show. The fight video is available in our videos section.

Next New Breed Amateur Fight (Feb. 9th)

New Breed will be holding their next amateur event at House of Blues, inside the Showboat casino in Atlantic City. Evolution Fight Team expects to have at least a couple fighters entered. One anticipated fight is Mervin Rodriguez from Xtreme MMA going against our own Bryan Danner.

Lionel Cortes Update

Lionel has improved enough that he's been moved from Cooper hospital to the rehab center that's near the Vineland hospital on Sherman Ave. From his myspace page, http://www.myspace.com/lionelcortesfund: "Lionel is doing "GREAT" he has improved past Doctors expectations already!!! He is starting to talk and even trying to get out of the bed. This is simply a Christmas wish that has came true. He will be starting rehab within the next week to further his progress and to gain some strength back. He still has a long way to go, so keep up the support and prayers that has helped him so much already. "
The family could still use a lot of financial help so if you have the means, please do what you can to help. See his myspace page for info on how to help.

New Breed Fight Results (12/28/07)

Danner, Tony and Pat were all scheduled to fight at New Breed's amateur event on Friday, December 28th. With only a day's notice, Danner found out his paperwork wasn't current in regards to his latest physical so he was unable to compete. His scheduled opponent, Mervin Rodriguez, was given an alternate opponent and the Danner/Rodriguez match will likely happen in February.
Tony fought Dave Maestas from Maestas Fight Club. As usual, Tony dominated the stand up and also did pretty well on the ground. In the third round, Tony hit Dave with some body shots that doubled him over. However, he wasn't able to put him away before the bell rang and it was up to the judges. By split decision, the judges awarded the win to Maestas.
Pat fought Craig "Casper" Alexander from Tiger Schulman Karate. This fight was up and down, back and forth, and could very well have been the fight of the night. In true Evo fashion, Pat controlled the stand up portion of the fight. He controlled most of the action in the first round, keeping it on their feet and delivering several well placed shots. The second and third rounds were a little closer and more of the fight was spent on the ground. Alexander was very flexible and attempted several submissions but Pat managed to avoid them all while maintaining top position for a majority of the fight. Once again, it came down to the judges who gave the win to Alexander.
Photos from the event are now up in the Gallery.

5 New Fighters Make The Team

Evo had team tryouts on Saturday, December 22nd. Five fighters made it through the grueling tryout and are now part of the Evo Fight Team. Congratulations to Ernesto, Chris, Tristan, Mark and Ed. Making the team is no easy task.

Evo Fighters will be at New Breed in Atlantic City

December 28th, New Breed has their next amateur event at the House of Blues in Atlantic City. Bryan Danner will be fighting Mervin Rodriguez, the current champion for Cage of Vengeance in his weight class. Anthony Williams is fighting Dave Maestas

REAL Amateur Fight Results (12/15/07)

Patrick White, Bryan Danner and Anthony Williams were all scheduled to fight at the "REAL" amateur fights on Saturday night in Rahway, NJ. A few days before the event, Patrick's opponent dropped out so we were down to just two competitors. Seven of us drove up to Rahway Saturday afternoon. Weigh-ins were at 3:30 and everyone made weight. Danner was slated to fight second and Anthony Williams was in the main event, fighting for the 185 pound title.
A couple minutes before the second fight was about to start, Danner's opponent dropped out. He claimed that he slipped in the bathroom and hurt his knee. Danner was awarded the win due to forfeit but the crowd was left disappointed because they didn't get to watch him fight. I guess we'll have to wait until Dec 28th when he'll fight at the New Breed show in Atlantic City.
Anthony's fight finally came up. He was fighting Steve Williams, a brown belt in Gracie Jiu Jitsu. Anthony hoped to keep the fight standing but Steve was very good at getting into the clinch and taking the fight to the ground. Anthony did a good job defending for a while but eventually, Steve managed to get a guillotine choke and Anthony was forced to tap out. This was Anthony's first MMA loss and we're expecting many more great fights out of him.
Pictures are now up in the gallery.

Evo Fighters in Action December 15th

Bryan Danner, Patrick White and Anthony Williams don't get much rest after their Thanksgiving Eve fights. They'll all be back in action on December 15th in Rahway, NJ at the Rahway Recreational Center. Doors open at 6:30 and fights start at 7:30. Visit http://acomsports.wordpress.com/ for more info on the venue. Come on out and support our local fighters. If you plan to go, get your tickets from the fighters. It's the only way they make any money for the amateur fights.

Results from Thanksgiving Eve New Breed Fights

Evo Fight Club had 3 guys figting in New Breed's amateur event on Thanksgiving eve. Pat White has only been training MMA for a short time but he's come a long way. He squared off against a tough opponent from Tiger Schulman's camp. Pat got caught with a shot and lost his footing. His opponent capitalized and secured a take-down. Despite showing a lot of heart, Pat was forced to tap to a rear naked choke in the first round. We're sure he'll come back even stronger in his next match. Bryan Danner and Anthony Williams both fought guys from Team Diesel. Both fights were fought mostly on the ground with our guys getting the best of each round. Both fights also went to a split decision. Apparently, one judge was confused about red vs blue. Going by the two sensible judges, Danner won his fight 30-27 and Anthony won his 29-28. Congrats to all three warriors. We look forward to seeing them in the cage again soon.
Photos from the event, along with a few from the after party, are in the gallery.

Lionel Cortes injured in motorcycle accident

Evo Instructor, Lionel Cortes, was badly injured in a motorcycle accident Friday evening. He is currently at Cooper hospital in critical condition. Please keep Lionel and his family in your prayers. Lionel's family will surely need some financial assistance for the medical expenses. A fund has been set up in Lionel's name. If you'd like to help out:
Make check payable to "Lionel Cortes Fund" and drop checks at any Commerce Bank or call Al Buck 609-381-4699. You can get more information about the Lionel Cortes fund on the MySpace page that was set up for him: http://www.myspace.com/lionelcortesfund

Oct 27th Grappling Tournament Results

On October 27th, Evo Fight Club had 7 members enter the Garden State Grappling tournament. Even though Evo is an MMA school, and not just a grappling/jiu-jitsu club, we still managed to win 5 medals. Joe won gold. Chris won silver. Lionel, Danner and Mike all won bronze. Pat and Ken also competed and did very well against some tough competition.
Congratulations to all who competed.

Kevin Jordan wins HW Title with Al Buck in his corner.

October 20, 2007: Kevin Jordan competed in BattleCage Extreme's third event. He fought the heavy hitting Carlos Moreno for the USKBA and BCX Heavyweight championship. Evo's own Al Buck worked the corner for Jordan and helped guide him to a 3rd round win via tapout. Morena tapped out after receiving a vicious knee from Jordan that rendered him unable to defend the following barrage of punches on the ground. Al Buck says he was happy to fill in when Jordan needed a cornerman at the last minute and is very proud of Jordan for a great fight. Al and everyone at Evo would like to congratulate Kevin Jordan.

Cage of Vengeance Results

Evo had 4 fighters signed up to fight at Cage of Vengeance in Egg Harbor Township on September 29th. Only 3 were able to show their stuff because, once again, Bryan Danner's opponent dropped out at the last minute. Competing were Joe Wagner, Anthony Williams and Patrick White.
Joe Wagner was the first Evo combatant to step into the ring. Fighting against an instructor from Atlantic City Mixed Martial Arts, Joe performed exceptionally well. He controlled most of the first round and managed to secure a triangle choke. However, the round expired before he could get the tap. Joe also controlled most of the second round before being caught in an armbar. Despite the loss, Joe fought very well and we expect more good things from him.
Anthony Williams fought another ACMMA instructor. He dominated the stand up fight and did a great job preventing takedowns. On the few occasions the fight did hit the mat, Tony worked well to either control the action or get back to his feet. After three rounds, he was awarded the decision win.
Patrick White, in his first MMA fight, was competing against the current amateur champ in his weight division. Mervin Rodriguez brought his belt to the ring in this non-title match. Pat fought well and even had a few chances to finish the fight, but Mervin was a tough opponent. After three rounds, Rodriguez was awarded the judges decision.

Everyone at Evo is very proud of their fighters. Great job guys!

Al Buck won a unanimous decision over Brian DeMuro on Saturday, June 23rd at Cage Fury Fighting Championship 5. It was a great battle that went the distance. Buck controlled most of the match. The only time he was in any real danger was when DeMuro managed to get top position after Buck had slipped while throwing a high kick.
Congratulations to Al Buck on his victory. We look forward to seeing his next fight, which could be in September.
